While we usually suggest that wisdom teeth be extracted. There are a few exceptions to the rule. The following information covers those times when extracting the wisdom teeth may not be required.
When Wisdom Teeth Do Not Need Extraction
Not everyone receives a full complement of teeth or has wisdom teeth. However, these far back molars often do appear, either impacted or erupted. In most cases, we will recommend that they be removed, as they can cause jaw and tooth pain, crowd other teeth, or be hard to clean. However, if the teeth fully erupt normally and are not causing any problems, we may not feel there is a need for removal. As long as you keep the teeth clean, they may not need to be extracted.
What Should I Do about an Impacted Wisdom Tooth?
We usually suggest that impacted wisdom teeth be removed, as these teeth are buried and hidden beneath the gum or jawbone, either totally or partially. The problem with these teeth is that you cannot get to them to clean them. Therefore, they can decay and lead to the development of gum disease. In addition, tumors or cysts may grow, in some instances, around the impacted teeth.
How We Evaluate Your Wisdom Teeth
We usually assess wisdom teeth on a case-by-case basis to determine if they require removal. If x-rays show that a tooth is completely impacted in the bone and that eruption is unlikely, we strongly suggest removal to prevent further dental problems and decay. However, if we can find no problems with the erupted teeth and they are not affecting the health of the adjacent teeth, we may leave them alone.
